Today is celebrated as ‘Christ the King’ Sunday and marks the end of the Calendar of the Christian Year. The next four Sundays are the season of Advent when we prepare for the celebration of the coming of Jesus at Christmas. In the Gospel reading for today, John 18:33-37, we see Jesus appearing before Pilate as part of his trial. Two different styles of kingship. One based on physical force, the other the power of the spirit of Jesus. One, the Roman Empire crumbled to dust. The other? Well, why are we worshiping today?
What does it mean to say that Christ is King? What does it mean for each of us personally? What does it mean for the Church? What does it mean for the world?
