One of the great joys of ministry is making connections across the local community. Our congregation has a long history of providing financial support to school chaplains who are working in local schools. This has been made possible through our Op Shop ministry which in itself is a way we connect with our local community. Each year we invite our school chaplains to a special commissioning service and have linked this with a blessing for the whole school. We this as a valuable way to let the community know we are there for them.
The old african proverb says: ‘It takes a whole village to raise a child’. We describe ourselves as a church for the village, one of several such churches, and we take seriously our charge to be salt and light in our community, to be a place of love and hope.
We value the contribution of people in our community who serve to make it a better place and that naturally, and importantly, includes teachers. They play a valuable role in the lives of our most precious asset, our children. On Sunday we will honour their contribution in the form of a blessing and as we do so we will also be praying a blessing on families.
