At the close of Mental Health Week

On Sunday we are  basing our service around the issue of mental health. The 2014 Qld Synod meeting (State body of the Uniting Church) encouraged congregations to join in the Mental Health Week Day of Prayer which marks the end of Mental Health Week, a government initiative aimed at reducing the stigma around mental health in our community. This year’s theme is #valuementalhealth It is estimated that one in five Australians are affected by mental illness at some point in…

Send the fire!

Pentecost Sunday! Pentecost is a Jewish festival which has taken on a different meaning for Christians as we recall the Acts 2 story of the empowering of the Apostles with the promised Holy Spirit. Pentecost Sunday is widely regarded as a celebration of the birth of the Christian Church. Certainly as the story is recorded, this is the catalyst for the movement. That opening period of the church’s life certainly had it all…signs and wonders, bold preaching, generous sharing of…

Easter – It’s all about you!

I don’t know if you noticed it… but we live in a culture where we are conditioned and encouraged to believe that life is ‘all about you’… your needs, your ambitions, your desires, your freedom, your way! Be who you want to be! Live how you want to live! The self is elevated above all else, even to the detriment of others. One need only glance at social media to see that society has embraced the narrative that it’s all…

Journey to the Cross

We are now in the church season of Lent, a forty day time period, mirroring the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness at the commencement of his public ministry. Lent is traditionally a time of reflection in preparation for Holy Week, the last week of Jesus’ life, leading to his crucifixion. Over the next six Sundays our church will embark on a ‘Journey to the Cross’ walking with Jesus beginning with his baptism by John and his time of…

What God Wants

Not only is it part of our human nature, we are conditioned by the constant bombardment of advertising  and media stories to think that life is all about us…. our wants, our needs, our way of doing things. This even can translate into our expectations in worship. Worship becomes what we want out of it, rather than what we give, or, to put it another way, what God wants from us. So ingrained is our thinking that life is all…

School community blessed

On the day prior to school returning, Mudgeeraba Uniting hosted a special service of blessing for the whole school community, which was very well received. Children were encouraged to return or begin school with confidence, and parents and grandparents were invited to stand with their children as we prayed a blessing over them and all local families. Teachers from several local schools attended and prior to blessing them we were reminded of the high regard  the community has for teachers.…

What the wise men teach us.

Ever wondered about the significance of those strange gifts given to the baby Jesus by the wise men from the east who followed the star? On January 6th Christmas is officially over! I know, Woollies and Coles moved on to Easter on Boxing Day with their hot-cross buns, but there are actually twelve days of the Christmas season. See, you didn’t have to take those Christmas lights down by New Years after all! Epiphany, celebrated on January 6th, marks the…

Christmas Services at MUC

It was standing room only at the MUC Christmas Eve service where participants were treated to a very entertaining evening of story, song, puppets and a nativity re-enactment performed by adults and children. On Christmas morning the congregation joyfully celebrated the birth of Jesus and heard how this action of God in coming among us in the Son was one of vulnerability,  self-giving and humility.
